This two part mini-series will tell the remarkable story of Peter Allen, one of Australia’s most loved entertainers, and how a boy from the bush became a superstar and conquered the world.
From his early life performing in Tenterfield, New South Wales at the encouragement of his mother Marion, to his discovery by Julie Garland, his marriage to her daughter Liza Minnelli, and his becoming American entertainment royalty; this is a true rags-to-riches story.
Starring Joel Jackson (Deadline Gallipoli) as the flamboyant Allen, Not The Boy Next Door also features Australian TV favourites Sigrid Thornton (Underbelly, SeaChange, The Man From Snowy River) as Judy Garland and Rebecca Gibney (Winter, Packed to the Rafters, Halifax f.p.) as Allen’s mother, Marion Woolnough. alongside Sara West’s (Anzac Girls, Winter) portrayal of Liza Minnelli.
Allen, an effervescent singer, songwriter and entertainer, would go on to be the first Australian to win an Oscar (‘Arthur’s Theme’), Grammy (‘I Honestly Love You’ – sung by Olivia Newton-John), and penned and performed some of the most enduring popular songs of his generation including ‘Rio’, ‘Tenterfield Saddler’ and the iconic anthem, ‘I Still Call Australia Home’ before his death in 1992.
