Australia soon to be buzzing about Maya The Bee

Sep 02, 2014

Maya the Bee, the beloved children’s character created over 100 years ago and brought to life through books and more recently an animated preschool series broadcast on ABC4Kids, will fly into Australian cinemas for the first time in early November 2014 with a full-length animated feature film, with a DVD release from Beyond Home Entertainment to follow in time for Christmas.

Co-produced by Studio 100 Media and Australia’s Flying Bark Productions with additional funding from Screen Australia and Screen NSW, Maya the Bee features a $17 million production budget and an A-list Aussie voice cast including Jacki Weaver (Animal Kingdom, Silver Linings Playbook), Richard Roxburgh (Van Helsing, Rake), Noah Taylor (Game Of Thrones), Kodi Smit-McPhee (Dawn Of The Planet Of The Apes, Gallipoli) and Justine Clarke (Tangle, Play School) along with celebrated British actress Miriam Margolyes (Miss Fisher's Murder Mysteries, Harry Potter). Incorporating the latest CGI animation techniques, the movie is directed by Alexs Stadermann, who has worked at Disney and Aardman Studios on films such as The Wild Bunch, Bambi 2, Tarzan 2, and The Lion King.

The fun-filled, animated feature follows the adventures of Maya, a young bee who leaves the hive and embarks on a new adventure to discover the beauty and mysteries of nature. Combining exquisite animated environments with beautiful natural landscapes, Maya the Bee follows the loveable character’s desire to escape her heavily regimented existence in the hive and experience the freedom to explore the world at her own will. A significant licensing program is in development with the launch of plush toys, games, apparel and accessories in ABC Shops in late 2014.

Beyond will release the Maya the Bee Movie on DVD on 1 December, 2014.
